Østenstaddammen is considered an archetypal ice pond, but today’s issues around the pond range from a leaking dam with the risk of breaking to questions about responsibilities, costs and ownership. What if the pond became a national monument of heritage, so people could learn about its history and the region gained both recreational and touristic value? Our proposal is a multi-layered journey from Gulhella train station to the coast with a path as the main storyteller. It forms a strong axis and Østenstaddammen serves as the hub between two other main intervention points which enable visitors to experience different aspects of the past. A myriad of lights make visible the presence and movement of water in the territory, the main resource and premise for ice production, while engaging seasonality and multiplying the spectrum of usage of the area.
